A Post for J...

Dear J,

Of all the things I could do for you today, I would like to do the thing that will bring you the most joy. I would like to make you laugh so hard that you forget, momentarily, that you're sick, that life is really really hard and painful and that we had that stupid fight yesterday. And then, somehow, I'd like to extend that feeling of joy for the rest of the day so that when you close your eyes tonight, you feel as if nothing is wrong in the whole world. And then continue to give you that joy for as long as we're together.

Happy Valentine's Day, buddy. I love you very much.

Love,

Amanda

In which J does something sciency...

(I've been trying to get J to do a guest post for a while and last night he came up with a great idea...so this is his first guest post...sorta...I mean, I'm writing it (and I added in my own little bit with the cat)...but it's totally his idea)

Last night, among the dirty dishes, laundry and cat hair tumbleweeds of the Self-designed Student Household Formation, we found a fossil. It took us several hundred nanoseconds to remove it from the bedroom matrix, but eventually, we had a beautifully-preserved specimen. After some final cleaning and field note-taking we tried to find out where, exactly, the bone belonged. J called the process a "common paleontological game."
Was it part of the mental protuberance?

Perhaps a tooth?
In the end, J decided that the bone was actually a nose spike. However, he had a nagging suspicion that he might someday be proven wrong.

Emily slept through the whole thing. What a sexy little creature...

J: Humor and Math

Me: "Ugh! I hate calculus. It doesn't make any sense."

J: "Maybe it's because you're using letters instead of numbers."

I'm so jealous...

Turns out there's a TARDIS in town and J got to it first! In case you don't know what a TARDIS is, I've included this very handy link. I admit that J's TARDIS doesn't look much like Dr. Who's TARDIS, but the chance of finding anything that remotely resembles the real TARDIS here in the states is unlikely. Nice hunting, J!

Does anyone else watch the new Dr. Who series? Or are J and I the only nerd-heads? We've even come up with a little code phrase for watching the show: Let's Who it.

Let's get a T.A.R.D.I.S. in here...

J is obsessed with the T.A.R.D.I.S. (that's Time and Relative Dimension in Space) machine from the new BBC Dr. Who series. Last night, we spent some time playing the opening sequence of the show in slow motion, trying to photograph the T.A.R.D.I.S. with our camera phones. We got some pretty shoddy shots. The goal was to have a good picture of the ship for the wallpaper of Jordan's phone. He decided that the caption would read, "Let's get a T.A.R.D.I.S. in here." We shared a nice hearty laugh over that one.

*Update* I just received this in my inbox:

Now that I've made a commitment to keeping up a blog (this isn't the first time), I have been noticing little things that I never have before. For instance, last night, I ordered a pizza from Leonardo's and the receipt that came attached to the box said "The Creative Quality Pizza." After a quick google, I found out that the business was started in 1990 claiming a creative, quality pizza. That's different. A creative quality pizza has the implication of creative quality. A creative, quality pizza implies creative and quality pizza. I don't want the quality of my pizza to be creative. I want the quality to be quality. The pizza can be creative...

Maintaining sanity, freshmen and why my boyfriend is amazing.

Maintaining Sanity: I've had a rough week. Seems I've fallen into a funk, which means that it takes that much more effort for me to maintain some amount of sanity. Usually, I start eating crappy food. I spend more money because I'm too lazy to cook dinner and lunch. I skip my aikido classes. I isolate myself from my friends and develop insecurities that manifest themselves in really ugly behavior (which then fuel the insecurities). ENOUGH!

This happens a lot :) What I've realized is that I don't have the luxury of enjoying my sanity. I need to work to maintain it, or else I don't have it. This is a bleak prospect. But it's also just the way things are. So...the only thing to do is continually work...spend time with people, do something that keeps me spiritually grounded. I cannot think myself into a good place...but I can take actions that will change my attitude. After a few days of self-care, I feel much better.

Freshmen: I am officially a student again. Because I am going back for another B.S., I am in a lot of intro courses. So are all the freshmen. Here are a few words for my fellow classmates:
  • Stop packing up your crap five minutes before the end of class. When I ask the professor a question, it's because I don't understand something and I feel that it's vital to my success in the class. I would like to be able to hear his reply.
  • When you ask a question and the professor says "no," and you ask "why," it becomes obvious that you spent the last fifteen minutes sleeping or chatting.
  • It's 65 degrees outside...that skirt only covers your crotch. Stop complaining about how cold it is in the lecture hall.
  • No...the homework isn't required. But it's strongly recommended. If you did the homework and still have questions, ask away. If you didn't...STOP WASTING MY TIME.

Why my boyfriend is amazing: I haven't done a tribute to J yet, but I've been feeling especially grateful for his presence in my life lately. Here's a few reasons why:

  • When I throw a fit because I can't do distribution analysis, J rubs my back and asks me why I'm having a hard time. And then I explain why and I feel smart again. And he listens, even though he has no idea what I am talking about.
  • At the end of each House episode, J does a funny walk to the beat of the soundtrack. And he doesn't stop until I'm in stitches.
  • When I try to leave for work, J won't let me go without making me hug him for a few minutes. And when he has to leave first, he makes sure he comes and hugs me goodbye.
  • Every morning, J sends me a text message that begins with "good morning, beautiful."
